Top 5 seaside spots In Crete

Gramvousa

Gramvoussa, or alternatively known as "Balos Bay" which can be found at the tip of the north-western peninsula of Crete. it is accessible by daily boat excursions from Kissamos village as well as a good dirt road leading close to the beach brought crowds during the day during the summer months. It is still an amazing spot to visit and enjoy the un and water, it is overcrowded during the summer period therefore we suggest to visit at the edges of the summer peiod, out of the eavy crowded season.

Elafonisi

Elafonisi is located at the south-west corner of Crete, Elafonisi was long a well-guarded secret location between the locals. The beach in Elafonisi is a sandy (red and pink coral sand) with crystal, clear turquoise water and it was not over crowded (in the previous days). Although , boats, tour buses and a multitude of rented cars go there every day, the beach is lined with umbrellas. It's still a spectacular spot though and you can escape the crowds by walking a bit further in the beach.

Palaiochora

Paleochora is unique among the villages on the south coast of western Crete in the way that it is a large village where Cretans live and work all year round. Its popularity with foreigners goes back to the 1970s. Nowadays, many more visitors come to spend their holidays in Paleochora. The village can not be characterized as picturesque but its long sandy beach is superb (although it's often windy) and there is a good choice of hotels, rooms for rent, good restaurants and pleasant bars with pleasant and welcoming nightlife (in a small Cretan village).

Falasarna

Falasarna on the western coast of Crete is a beach famous to surfers and kite surfers as it is often . Some parts of the beach may be organized, but generally it is a sandy natural beach with few to minimum facilities near the water (such as umbrellas or sunbeds). It's a really nice spot if you can and the beach(es) are big enough to not feel crowded, even on the busiest of days.

Public transport is very limited and if you want to be able to move there. The nearest town (Kissamos) is about 20 km away. The nearest airport at Chania is about 50 km away.

Georgioupolis

Georgioupolis and its long sandy beach, is located on the north coast of west Crete is following the same pattern of hotel density as the many other beaches est of Chania. There can be hound many hotels being built between the main road and the beach. You may discover more quieter parts of the beach, particularly moving towards the eastern end of Georgioupolis Beach

As Georgioupolis is located right by the national road between Chania and Rethymnon the connections by public transport are good in both directions. It is located about 45 minutes drive from Chania airport and a little over an hour from Heraklion airport.

Sougia (Special Mention)

Sougia beach is a pebble beach located in the southern part of western Crete, is one of the best beaches for numerous reasons. It is rarelly crowded, 1200 m long and located nearby a small village. The beach is not organized, there are no beach umbrellas, naturalism is tolerated on a large part of the beach, the sea and the beach are very clean, the surrounding landscape is beautiful, the pebbles are fine so not at all uncomfortable to lie on. We have enjoyed our time in Sougia beach and have had some our our best and memorable moments at this place with the local welcome to excite us
